As we wind our way toward the end of 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am hopeful of a better new year. And part of that hope includes opening a “model” of Joshua’s House Hospice with 5-8 beds within a local community clinic in early 2021!

As you can imagine, the pandemic halted our work last February on starting construction at the 1501 North C Street site that we purchased in 2018 for Joshua’s House Hospice and, over a few months, caused a sharp increase in building costs – raising the estimated construction cost to $5.5 million. While we have raised $1.8 million and had a $1 million commitment from the city of Sacramento, we would still be short another $2.7 million, and it appears unlikely we could raise that in a few months.

Exciting News!

Thus, we are negotiating opening the model and then building a full 10-20 bed Joshua’s House Hospice facility next door to the community clinic in mid-2021. Building a facility from the ground up avoids the risks of trying to retrofit an almost 100-year-old facility and will save a great deal of money.

In addition, there is also the possibility of opening a 10-bed Joshua’s House Hospice in the Davis community as well so we could have three sites operating by the end of 2021! As they say, one door closes and another (or several others) open! It all boils down to persistence, hard work, commitment, and faith!

We Are Grateful

I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of you who have stood by and supported us throughout our journey to create the first hospice house for the terminally ill homeless on the West Coast and only the ninth in the country! We would not be where we are without all of you! With the dramatic increase now in the homeless population, the need for even more facilities like Joshua’s House Hospice will grow and we want to see our model replicated throughout the country!

Stay safe and healthy.
