MEMO TO VOLUNTEERS
FROM: Carlye Wilder, Yolo Hospice, SHC Board Member
SUBJECT: Joshua’s House and Sacramento Hospice Consortium
As someone who has indicated they will be volunteering for Joshua’s House, we wanted to reach out and let you know a few recent updates.
We are so excited to announce that Joshua’s House is now an Affiliate Member of the Sacramento Hospice Consortium. Our missions of providing quality, trained volunteers to our organizations is in alignment and we can now begin working closer together to achieve our goals of service.
It is our understanding there are two types of volunteers with Joshua’s House; one being a patient care volunteer which would not include any physical care or duties and one of professional companion (“Friend”) which would include personal care services. It is to the patient care volunteer that we wish to reach out to with this Memo.
All terminally ill homeless patients will be referred into Joshua’s House for hospice care, through one of the Sacramento Hospice Consortium members. Their hospice teams are comprised of a nurse, social worker, spiritual care provider and patient care volunteer. So, as a volunteer for Joshua’s House you may be assigned to one of these teams. (Please note that Dignity Health Mercy Hospice is not a member of the Consortium, so interested potential volunteers would need to contact their volunteer offices directly.)
To that end, we ask you to select one of our hospices (see attached list) and begin your volunteer service. We recommend that you elect to take a client now to obtain experience and serve others while waiting for Joshua’s House to begin accepting patients.
Below is a list of our SHC Nonprofit Members and the contact information for their Volunteer Coordinators. Please reach out to one so you can begin the process of orientation and the requirements involved with becoming a hospice volunteer (TB test, background screening, etc.).
We wish you the best in whichever organization you choose!
